We proudly present to you KAA Mentorship Program

This holiday season, we’re launching our first Mentorship Program! The program pairs up a mentee with a mentor from January to June 2015. Throughout this relationship, there will be contact via remote session at least once a month to discuss any questions, comments, or concerns regarding academics, career choices, or any life decisions.

Purpose

The purpose of KAA ‘s Mentorship Program is to provide one-on-one guidance and support for Cambodian students. By doing so, KAA aims to promote enriching knowledge, professional development, experience and relationships that will help empower Cambodian students to succeed in their academic/career success, individual goals and lives thereafter.

Mentors and Mentees

Mentors are members of the Khmer Alumni Association who have filled out an application. After completing the application, the committee leads will notify mentors and have them go through a training session. Mentees are high school students who have filled out an application, which includes a parent/guardian consent form. Upon submitting the application, a screening process will take place and a selected group of mentees will be invited to attend orientation. Afterwards, the committee leads will notify mentees and mentors of their pairing beginning January 17th.

2 Years Down, Many More to Come

As KAA finishes it’s second year of existence, KAA hosted it’s final event for the 2013-14 year.  “A Midsummer Night: A Khmer Soiree” raised nearly $700 (and possibly more) in scholarship funds towards the empowerment and education of students.  The Khmer Soiree had nearly 100 guests in attendance, which included KAA members, community members, student organization representatives, future KAA members, and family and friends.  The Khmer Soiree featured khmer formal attire, snacks, Khmer hors d’oeurves, drinks, music, dancing, photobooth, and art gallery.

Although the event was a major success, we are sad to see the departure of five of KAA’s most important figureheads, Linda Sok, Thourn Heng, Melinda Kuoch, Phanith Sovann, and Jenny Gov.  Although KAA will surely miss the enthusiasm, dedication, and knowledge that these five have  imparted on board, members and the community, KAA will continue to work towards it’s mission and goals of serving our three programs.
